The terms balanced light and fill flash can be used interchangeably but in the context of underwater photography most people use the term ‘fill’ with dual strobes to describe filling in the shadows cast by the main strobe i.e. making them lighter. Though, just to confuse us, it can be used to refer to filling in the shadows when the main source is natural light!

There is no metering system clever enough calculate fill for you so you need to do it with the M word – Manually! Fortunately it is quite simple. You don’t need to be that accurate. Fill-in flash is an art, not a science.
