Regardless of camcorder format the basic principle
of how the camcorder works is the same, images are recorded by light
sensitive microchips called Charge Coupled Devices (CCD's) which basically
translate light into electronic signals.
The camcorder
supplies a charge to the CCD for operation. The CCD has a number of lines
(just like a TV screen). The charge is applied to only half the lines at a
time, alternating between odd and even number lines. Each of these images is
called a field and is interlaced together to form a frame. Each field is a
snapshot of the action. If the frames are played back at the same speed they
were recorded than the brain accepts them as a moving image.
