Smaller subjects typically 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.5cm) shot on macro settings or with macro equipment that are NOT MOVING usually on the bottom (i.e. between 1:1 and 1:3)
"Black Beauty" - Because of the seahorse's dark color, I chose to silhouette it with backlight, and frame it within the brightly-colored sealife it was hiding in.

"Christmas Comparison" - I photographed these same Christmas tree worms as an example for single strobe position. Shot with identical settings but moving the strobe further back to create more shadows, and hence, texture!

My first pygmy seahorse. I would have loved to have him/her looking toward the camera - but I'm just happy he/she is in focus and I didn't cut off any body parts. These critters are much tinier and harder to see than I expected.
