Peoples' Vote

2024 has been the year of the bait ball in Bonaire. This tired turtle is looking for a place to rest, oblivious of the cyclone of big eye scan just meters away. Shot with a Nikon Z8/Nauticam housing/INON z330 strobes.

"Spinning Sponges"
The sponge in the foreground is illuminated by my strobes, while the ones in the background spin! No Photoshop.
"Sandy and the Jacks"
Large Southern Stingray along the sandy bottom of Stingray City dive site accompanied by some fish back up.
shortlistedShortlisted!
"Christmas Texture"
Christmas tree worms in a beautiful shade of orange, contrasting nicely against charcoal-colored coral! Texture achieved by shooting with a single strobe.
'It's Raining Squid' - Two Caribbean reef squid in the shallow waters of Grand Cayman during a rain storm
shortlistedShortlisted!
"Take a Breath"
A Hawksbill Turtle starts a breath up to prepare for the next dive.
"Going Down"
A Hawksbill Turtle decends towards the reef.
"Wrap Around"
"In the shadows"
"Porthole Frame"
A diver is framed through a porthole on the bridge of the USS-Kittiwake. The room this photo was taken in is painted, its bright colors coming out with my twin strobes.
"Glowing Skeleton"
A skeleton shrimp photographed with my Nightsea fluorescence kit, causing it to glow!
"Framed"
"The Furnace"
Deep in the decks of the Kittiwake I found this object that I thought to be a stove. To create this glow, I detached my focus light and gently placed it inside.
shortlistedShortlisted!
I found this starfish climbing over mangrove tree roots. Once it got near the surface of the water, I was able to frame the photograph I wanted: both the over-under view, as well as the reflection of the starfish on the surface of the water.

"Full Extension"
A large Hawksbill Turtle extends his fins way out to create as much momentum for his dive as possible.
"Starfish Through The Lens"
A starfish is seen both in front, and through, my Sea&Sea dome port. I took this photo as I framed a shot.
"Golden Portrait"
A rare golden coney. No filters used: I angled my strobes to light just the coney's face, and used a high shutter speed, which kept the water behind it blue and provided a nice contrast to the yellow.
"Lift Off"
A Spotted Eagle Ray propels itself up and over a coral head stirring up sand with its momentum.
"The Big and the Little"
A pair of Slender File Fish caught together.
"Back to Work"
After a small breath up on the surface this Hawksbill is ready to dive.
"Storm the Ship"
Horse-eyed Jacks crusiing past the Kittiwake.
shortlistedShortlisted!
"Turtle In The Sunlight"
A turtle glides over the reef under beautiful rays of light.
Spotts Beach, Grand Cayman
"First to the Scene"
The Silversides have been sporadic so far this year, but it never fails Tarpon are the first to know about it.
"Green Dragon"
A diver illuminates an eel with his torch.
"Ray Under Rays"
Since the Ray's are so used to snorkelers and divers, they have enough trust to make overhead passes like these, making for interesting angles and of course sun rays.
shortlistedShortlisted!
"Expectant Parents" - A pair of two claw shrimp, including one with eggs, in the bottom of a purple vase sponge. Two claw shrimp are a rare find on Grand Cayman; these are the only ones I've seen in over 300 dives on the island!
Runner Up - worthy of note but not a medal winner - an equal 4th place if you like! Runner Up 2016

Final RoundThrough to 2016 awards final round judging
"Compacted"
As predators get close to the schools of Silversides they begin to get closer and closer to each other and the reef.
"Descending"
A large Hawksbill Turtle makes his plunge back into the blue.
