2012/13 World Champion Christian Vizl
This year's World Champion and breakout star is without doubt Mexican u/w photographer Christian Vizl.
He only joined us in March 2012 but has demonstrated consistently high quality over such a relatively short period of time.
He is the only u/w photographer in our history to take Gold, Silver and Bronze in one year. He did this with three very different model shots that he entered in the Freshwater category. This is a good tactical move because it is a category that is under subscribed so give you better odds of being placed. These shots were so good they would have got medals in the Divers or Wide Angle categories. For good measure he also won a gold medal in the sharks category and a bronze in the Wide angle category. He has demonstrated such a wide range of skills and mastery of a broad spectrum of subjects he stood out head and shoulders.
Christian describes himself as a photographer and artist, which is confirmed by his strong graphic sense exhibited in his entries.

I have a passion for the ocean, for animals, for beauty and nature. Used to be a Diving Instructor, now I only dive for pleasure. I´m also a cave diver, and an artist. So now I´m combining this to create unique underwater images.
Because beyond the issue of our survival is the issue of how we experience our life and how we celebrate it. And our experience of life is intrinsically linked to how we communicate and "connect" with everything around us, especially with all life around us. In my case, it’s the ocean and their living creature that makes me want to celebrate. So my photography is intended to be a celebration of marine life and the underwater world.
I use a Canon 5D Mark II with an aquatica housing.

Grand Master - Nick Blake
UK photographer Nick Blake becomes a Grand Master by building on his success in previous year with five placings this year including a Gold in temperate waters category and a silver in the Wide Angle Close Focus. The latter was a tropical waters shot but we know Nick best for his temperate waters work shot whilst diving around the UK. His usual environment is therefore a difficult one to work in, yet he always delivers the goods.

A childhood fascination with diving and the ocean, inspired by the 70's TV series "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau", led to Nick learning to dive at the earliest opportunity, aged 14 back in the 1980's.
Diving primarily around the UK, it is only in more recent years that Nick's long standing interest in photography has extended into the water. Having initially bought an Olympus underwater compact camera in 2004 and subsequently Nikon D300/D3 DSLRs, one to one tuition with renowned Underwater Photographer Martin Edge has proved instrumental in Nick's development.
Now fuelled by dive trips to more tropical climes as well as continued UK diving as a member of Woking based BSAC branch Surrey Aquanauts, a selection of Nick's more recent underwater photographs together with images of personal interest above the water can be seen via the web site link.
