The Neptune Memorial Reef at a depth of 40 feet is 3.25 miles (5.2 km) off the coast of Key Biscayne, Florida. Originally planned as a replica of the Lost City of Atlantis, beautiful columns, starfish, memorial plaques, and a lion statue form the world’s largest man-made reef (covering over 600,000 sq feet). This is an underwater cemetery where cremated remains are mixed with cement to form features of the Reef and memorial plaques are added.

Green Sea Turtles can grow to reach lengths of 5 feet and live as long as 80 years. Unfortunately, their numbers are decreasing, the result of habitat destruction (nesting grounds in particular,) boat propellers, and the consumption of both their meat and eggs. This particular turtle was photographed on Molasses Reef within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary near Key Largo where I found him dining on a meal of sea grass and sponges.
