Sugar Wreck is a cargo boat (carrying sugar) that went down ard dec 2000. It had originaly run aground butwas refloared once the cargo had beentransfered. however the damage sustained to the hull resulted in it going down once it was under tow. It lies on it's starboard side in just 18 metres of water with the port side being at abt the 6/7 metre mark. The lenth of the wreck is 90metres and the area in which it lies flat bare sand. Trips to the wreck are all by speedboat from the Perhentian Islands and take about 20mins on average. The general condition is still good and it is possible to access the cargo area through the open hatch's. Whilst it is still important to be aware of your surroundings it is an easy wreck to dive around, approx 20m away from the hull are some flat cargo crates sprouting a lot of whip coral, harp coral and some soft coral. The hatch's ALWAYS have bamboo sharks underneath,Lionfish and Scorpionfish on top, numorous Giant puffers hanging around and they are a great place to look for Nudi's. Because the area surrounding the wreck is just sand it has formed a good artificial reef so both around the wreck (and inside the hull) there are large schools of juvenial Yellowtail Barracuda,Onespot Snapper,Schooling Mullet. Other residents include various Porcupinefish,Giant,Mappa and Yelloweyed Puffers,Batfish,Trevalies,Pickhandle Barracuda,Lionfish,Scorpionfish to name but a few. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled on the bottom for Hermitcrabs,Octopus,Nudi's and sometype of eel that we were neverable to properly identify(bit like a snake eel). Full penetration is possible but the internal walls are decaying quite considerably and it slts out VERY easily so good line work is a must. The wreck it's self has no corals really but is covered in shells (except the port side) and the hull is a gd place to hunt for "different" Nudi's downside is the area you need to cover. So if you ever go to the Perhentian Islands (northeast coast peninsular Malaysia) this is a must do dive site.

Pulau Perhentian is a great island which is not well known by international divers or travellers. It offers great dive sites and beaches that are not crowded like Bali and Thailand. If you are wishing to go there the best budget places to stay are at Long Beach on Pulau Perhentian Kecil. If you prefer staying at more expensive hotels and resorts you can find them on Pulau Perhentian Besar. Almost everyone on the Island can speak English and they are really friendly. I would recomend to go diving with Spice Divers click here because they are the only locally owned and operated dive shop on the island, they provide the best services and are really friendly. The instructors there speak English, Malay, German, French and Italian.

Hi! My name is Bryan and Im from Dcoconut Lagoon Island Resort, Malaysia. We operate a dive resort on Lang Tengah Island which is a neighboring island to Redang Island, off the East Coast of Malaysia. Lang Tengah is one of the most popular dive destinations in Malaysia. The island itself has 12 dive sites which are easy on the divers and enjoyable. Besides that, there are several spots perfect for snorkeling. If divers are interested in diving at Redang Island, it will only take a 30 minutes boat ride from Lang Tengah.
