Although topside it was stormy, at depth it was glassy calm but almost as dark as a night dive. The Indians was like diving in a large acquarium, great visibility and quite a bit of variety in the flora and fauna.

Pelican island is a tiny island that often times does not show up on maps. It is within sight of Norman Island in the British Virgin Islands. When we began the dive it was stormy on the surface - raining cats and dogs and the waves were running 2-3 feet. Below the surface it became glassy calm, but very dark, almost as dark as a night dive. Although it was early afternoon, many night creatures were being to start to move around. This truck fish had just come out from behind a large sea fan when I saw it. I managed to snap just this shot before he was gone.

Water vizibility was better than 100'. It was a relatively cloudless day. And the temperature at depth was the same as at the surface. Another great day in paradise.

This triple wreck site consists of the Marie L, a cargo boat intentionally sunk in the early 1990s, the Pat, a tugboat sunk a few years later that now lies up against the Marie L, and the Beata, sunk in 2001. Whilst the wrecks themselves provide an interesting feature to explore, be sure to look for the large colony of garden eels slightly around the wrecks and the stingrays that frequent the area – these are much braver than at other sites and will happily swim through the middle of the dive group. Time on the wrecks is limited due to the depth so the dive is completed on the shallower reef (about 50 ft) around the dive boat mooring.

Nekton Cruises did a great job, too bad they went out of business. They had a variety of locations and holes that few people dove. In an entire week we only saw another boat when we registered in the Bahamas! There are dive sites that may be lost to divers everywhere.

The Vandenburg is an artificial reef sunk in May of 2009. We chartered a boat from Key West and it was about a 45 minute ride. It was fascinating to see all the life that uses the Vandenburg already. There are no visible corals yet but a great deal of life is already attaching and using the shelter of the ship. There was a tremendous number of bait fish and barracuda. I plan to return to the Vandenburg every few years to see how life progresses. Fascinating! We did a double dip with the first dive to about 95 feet and the second stayed at about 60 feet. Great technical dive, because deck is about 100 feet and bottom is about 160+. Impressive and fun if you like diving wrecks!

Easy entry! Short 4' climb down a ladder watching for swells. Immediate corals. 20' swim to clear entry area, drops to approx.15'. Nice lazy swim uw in an easy surge for about 100yds. When you reach the edge of horse shoe shaped wall, it's a good time to double check with buddy(s). Bottom at this point drops to about 50' to 65'. You can stay above coral in 25' on the left and right. Beautiful, very colorful, many species of fish large and small, eels, scorpion fish, turtles, many varieties of coral, sea fans... OR, you can glide straight off the wall. fantastic formations left and right. On the left as you round the corner of the reef, there is a large, very large coral head not attached to the reef that you can spend quite a bit searching. If you stay to the reef wall around the corner, there is a huge over hang, usually filled with large tarpon just hanging out. The reef weaves in and out for a very long way, so watch your air. 1/3 out, 1/3 back, there is plenty to see without leaving the general entry area. Off to the right, the wall rather tucks in on itself down to the sea floor. simply awesome, best place in the world for night dives. Occasionally there is a gentle current, just keep yourself streamlined and take your time. There is so much to see. OR, check in at the Dive Tech Store and rent scooters. Oh, yeah, if you go straight out for a couple hundred yards from the first reef, you can reach the main wall, which of course drops down to extreme depths and encirles all of GCI. Dive safe, take pictures, leave only bubbles!!!
