The Channel - Wakatobi

   Indonesia  Banda Sea
This was an amazing dive. First we swam along the wall at around 80 feet. when we came to the entrance of the cahnnel we hung on near the edge waiting to see ahrkes. We did see one shark, then when we let go we were swept into the channel for a wild ride!

Everthing flew past us as we drifted in to this inlet at several knots. Not the best for underwater photography due to the current, but a fantastic dive anyway!

Thistlegorm - Sha'ab Ali

   Egypt  Red Sea
In 1956 Jacques Cousteau, with his mythical oceanographic ship Calypso, discovered the wreck of the Thistlegorm on the outer wall of the immense reef known as Sha'ab Ali, off the western coast of Sinai. This was a British transport ship built in1940 by Thomson & Sons that was lying at anchor early in the Second World War when it was attacked by a squandron of German bombers from Crete. The Thistlegorm had come from Cape Town loaded with material for the British troops in North Africa (munitions, hand grenades, anti-tank mines, Lee Enfield MK III rifles, BSA motorcycles, Morris automobiles, Bedford trucks, two light MK II Bren Carrier tanks, two locomotives, two railway freight cars, two tank cars, spare parts, medicines, tires and rubber boots) and was hit by two bombs; it sank for 30 meters in an upright position onto the flat and sandy floor.
Cousteau found a ship which, despite the fire that had resulted from the bombing, was virtually intact, as was its cargo. He documented his discovery in some scenes in one of his memorable documentary films so that the public at large would become acquainted with this extraordinary wreck, which is considered the most interesting in the Red Sea and has become a great favourite with scuba divers from all over the world.

The Caves

   Israel  Red Sea
Not actually caves (well a small one) but what aussies call a 'bommy'
There are a couple of coral outcrops 200 yards offshore with masses of marine life. Hard and soft corals, stonefish, shoals of Anthias.
Some say Stingray City Cayman is the World's best 10 foot dive. They haven't dived here! This site has won more photo contests for more underwater photographers than any site in the Red Sea. It is the u/w photographers ideal studio. Shallow (so you can stay down a long time) easy access and everything typical of the Red Sea (color, life etc.)
Keep it a secret!

The Sound Of Mull

United Kingdom  Sea of the Hebrides
This was my first 50M dive!
I remember sliding down a fantastic wall, getting narked at 50M and ascending pulling at all the sea pens, which quickly retracted!
On the surface the seals look at you like 'what are you doing' as they sit undisturbed on various rocks. If you're lucky they'll follow you underwater too.
Fantastic stuff

The Aquarium, Dhofar

   Oman  Indian Ocean
I have been diving i Oman for a few years now, both North and South, but my favourite dive will always be the aquarium. I have always tried to end the weekends diving with a visit to the aquarium, its an easy shore dive, entering in a small rocky gully sinking down onto table coral where we find all sorts of small marine life, usually lobsters hiding in the coral and puffer fish hanging around. we then make our way across the bay to the aquarium itself. It starts off with a small rocky reef, loads of small fish, clown fish in their anemones, scorpion fish spread around, you can usually see rays and turtles here. moving towards the mouth of the bay you pass through the main coral which is covered with small marine life and for a while we had our own nurse shark, which hid amongst the coral, then pass on to the wall keeping an eye out for lion fish, stingrays normally settled on the bottom, depending on air consumption you can exit the bay to check out bigger reefs, but then turn around to pass back through the bay again, I will always love this dive. Thi is a very good dive site to train on, the middle of the bay has a flat bottom with sand, after carrying out your training you can show students lots of life and it can all be contained withing the bay.
Only problem with the site is it is 80 km from Salalah, the nearest big town and we always took all our own equipment and compressors, camping on the beach for weekends and longer when there are holidays.
The dive is also a good snorkelling site.

Three Stooges

   Myanmar (Burma)  Andaman Sea
This site goes by many names

3 Stooges (Three Islets) or Shark Cave or In Through the outdoor.

Distance from Phuket: 170 NM

Distance from Victoria Point: 53 NM

3 Stooges consists of one small island and two large rocks, all of which rise above the surface. Each could be considered a separate site; there is no way to see them all on a single dive, or even a full day of diving.

All three are perfectly suited for multilevel profiles, with thriving marine life from the bottom to the surface.

Underwater, the combination of unusual topography and a tremendous variety of creatures makes this one of the best dive sites in the Mergui Archipelago.

Nearly every square meter is riddled with crevices that provide shelter and holdfasts for an enormous volume of fish and invertebrate life. Aside from the marine life, another outstanding feature is a large canyon on the north end of the main island where you can encounter up to a dozen semi-resident grey reef sharks.

Past the canyon on the right you will find an opening to a tunnel that runs completely through the island and exits on the east side at about 15m. Be sure not to disturb the several huge tawny nurse sharks that sometimes rest within the crevices as you pass through.

Tips

   Benin  Atlantic (South)
I have lived in West Africa for two years and can confirm that there are people diving there. As far as I know the numbers are limited and mainly local expats. Also the Club Med in Assinie (Ivory Coast) has no diving in its offered activities. Benin is accorcording to my knowledge no favorite dive location for Dutch tourists. I can however recommend visiting Cotonou / Benin as it will show you a completely different culture compared to Europe and in general the Benin people are quite friendly

The Gulf

   Bahrain  Arabian Sea
Diving in the Persian (Arabian) Gulf, it is very different from the Red Sea. Lots of silt here with a few coral reefs, sea grass beds, and interesting oyster beds here in Bahrain. Haven't been to UAE or Oman, but have been doing lots of diving here in Bahrain. Water temp is dropping. Starting putting on shorties a few weeks ago, almost time for full wet suits. During November, water temps can drop 5 to 7 deg C per week. It's down to the 20's now. A month ago, we were in t-shirts!

The Baltic

   Germany  Baltic Sea
We travelled to the port of Greifswald in the former East Germany to board the Artur Becker. This is a converted survey ship that has been refitted for the needs of sport divers with an air compressor and recompression chamber on board. The captain, Karl - Heinz Hanke, has wide experience of the Baltic and the entire crew were helpful and supportive throughout our charter. Conditions aboard were basic but comfortable although we had to cater for ourselves.

The Souffleur

   Lebanon  Mediterranean Sea

The Souffleur

The submarine 'Souffleur' is a French Vichy Submarine, built in 1924
and sunk by the British on April 25th 1941 with a loss of 50 lives.

The Macedonia

This wreck is starting to form an artificial reef. The 'Macedonia' is
the shallowest of the diveable wrecks, laying in 2 sections in 16M. She was a
cargo ship who ran aground on the shallow rocks during the 1960's. The crew
managed to keep her afloat until the cargo was removed and she was then sold to
an individual in order to be broken up for scrap. Unfortunately, the new owner
was unable to complete his task, as the remains of the ship sank during a storm!
This is not a breathtaking dive as she is barely recognizable as a ship; the
remains are mainly broken ribs and plates but her position next to a small reef
means she has been fairly well colonized and Groupers and Morays are common.
Lobsters can be seen in season and we were fortunate enough to encounter a
Common Guitarfish.

Alice B

The ' Alice B ' is an excellent wreck for penetration dives and very
photogenic due to the fact that she sits upright and largely intact at 37M. The
Militia sank her during the civil war in order to make an insurance claim. She
was declared 'lost at sea' and the insurance company duly paid out one million
US dollars in compensation! Still, the insurance company's loss is our gain!
