Malaysia South China SeaAs the name suggests, this site has a small lighthouse on top of a long narrow but shallow reef. The reef itself is quite large and has a variety of habitats. Under the legs of the lighthouse it is only 4 metres to the top of the reef. The coral here is in excellent condition and therefore popular with snorkelers during the day, but it also is the hang out for small shoals of fish and makes an excellent safety stop after the dive. Going West from the lighthouse and dropping off the coral takes you to a whip garden at a depth of 12 to 14 metres and a good spot to find Whip Gobies. Look out for the grumpy Titan Triggerfish that patrols this area. I think it's best to dive this site as a twilight dive as the sun is going down and catch the dramatic light as it shines through the legs of the lighthouse. Lots of Anemonefish and colourful coral here. Sea Temp 29c in May

Norway North SeaLurefjorden north of Bergen is home to the fantastic deep-sea jelly Periphylla periphylla, also known as crown jelly. There animals normally live on a depth of 7-800 to 7-8000 meters, but in Lurefjorden they can be found thriving in "just" 400 meters of water.
To see these amazing creatures it is necessary to dive at night in the winter (february is the best time). The dive is done in the middle ov the fjord, over deep water, as the jellies migrate vertically. The best time is a moonless night between midnight and 02:00. If you're lucky, you'll see thousands!
Every february we do a special "jelly safari" weekend with Gulen Dive Resort (www.gulendiveresort.com), the only resort in the world to offer this unique experience. Diving is for advanced/experienced divers only, as it is done in open, pitch black water several hundret feet above the bottom. It is very easy to loose track of your depth as there are no points of reference.

New Zealand PacificDive site is a large underwater pinnacle, starting at 6m depth and falling to 30m. The boat anchors on the top of the pinnacle and you descend to the bottom of the rock and work your way back up to the top in a spiral. Since the rock is away from the main island, the light has made it possible for more kelp to grow on it. Small shoals of Butterfly Perch and Pink Maomao hang out in shady spots under ledges or kelp. Lots of colourful Bryozoans and Sponges cover the rocks and look wonderful in the dappled light under the kelp. Sea Temp 19c (Jan 2008)
