cannibal rock

   Indonesia  Banda Sea
an adrenalin dive. get in get down and then try to get across the top of the pinnacle to where the sharks hang out. this is a dive for experienced divers. the shark action was great but nothing compared to the amount of schooling fish. we see schools of every reef fish going. i would say at least 30000 fish probably double that, i lost count at 2134. not a site for a big camera rig though. the current you have to fight is 4-5 knots.

7 Tree Island,Port Hardy,B.C.

   Canada  Pacific
A colourful wall full of life on one side and a shallow kelp forest with many inhabitants on the other. As you descend you find a ledge at 50 feet, covered in white plumose anemones. This is your chance to make any needed gear adjustments before descending over what seems to be a bottomless wall. Pinks, reds, oranges, purples dazzle the eyes. Soft corals, sponges, anemones cover the wall and king crabs, irish lords and sea purch hide in plain sight. Barnacles feed in the current and divers can float effortlessly as the current takes you gently to the end of the island. When you round the end you enter a shallow kelp forest, home to many different fish, including the elusive rock greenling. What a dive!

Malapascua Island/Cebu

   Philippines  Visayan Sea
Monad Shoal is about a 15-20 minute boat ride from Malapascua Island. Malapascua Island is found off the northern end of the island of Cebu in the Philippines. It is accessed by ferry from the town of Maya. Monad Shoal is one of the few areas where you can routinely sight Thresher Sharks. It's not a 100% and there can be dry spells. I sighted Threshers in 3 out of 4 dives when made at the right time of day. In late October, early November, that means being in the water around 6 AM. I made a couple of dives later in the morning. No Threshers, but did see a nice octopus on one dive and some nice nudibranchs including a Neon Slug on the other. I made two afternoon dives there. On the first we had a nice Manta Ray sighting. It swooped in over us and just kept circling out and back in. My buddy with the video camera got 18 minutes of footage! On the other afternoon dive I made we didn't see Manta's that day, but I did see a couple of nice stonefish. It's in an exposed are and there can be a current, so something to be aware of. Visibility on a good day can be 60 ft+.... the average is closer to 30 ft. Lots of small fish life... cleaner wrasse, some anemone's and clownfish, saw some nice size batfish on one dive. All in all definitely worth the trip!

Playa Crashboat

   Puerto Rico  Caribbean Sea
Playa Crashboat is an excellent diving site. It is located on Route 107 in Aguadilla. Offering easy shore entry and exits, it is a must dive for all levels of divers. There are four piers above the water and one sunken. Originally, Navy boats docked there to be ready to rescue downed airplanes from the former Ramey Air Force Base. Max. depth around the piers is 35 feet. There is a vast amount of marine life on the piling of the piers. Often you find a lobster or two under the sunken pier. Turtles and seahorses linger around the pilings. The sandy bottom is home to gobies and queen conch.

For the technical diver, a sunken buoy sits at 120' feet of water. Local divers have marked with lines routes to points of interest such as the "tires" and the sunken buoy.

Puerto Rico Technical Diving Center offers guided shore dives to Playa Crashboat (and other local dive sites) during the day or night for a reasonable fee. Experienced divers may want to rent equipment and do a self-guided tour. PRTDC will give a complimentary briefing to its customers upon request about the conditions and route.

-DAY OR NIGHT--Good all around dive

statia

   Netherlands Antilles  Caribbean Sea
I have been diving over all of the Caribbean and have at last settled on St Eustatius (Statia). I has everything a diver could want and the folks are nice. The population of the island is under 3000, so there is little tourist trade and is passed by the cruise ships. I have been diving since 1964 and this will have to rate as probably the top. I expect to be going here until I get too old to dive.

USS Oriskany

   United States
This is one of the great dive sites in the Gulf of Mexico. The 900' long air craft carrier is a monster and has something for everyone. The island is just 65' below the surface and stops at the flight deck 135' down. This is where the bulk of the diving takes place, but for the tech divers out there this wreck is a playground and a half that you can have almost all to youself. You don't have to take my word for it go online and contact any of the shops in Pensacola, Fl. ( I suggest MBT Divers 850 455 7702 or website )they all agree this is THE GREAT CARRIER REEF.

Anilau, Batangas

   Philippines  Sulu and Sulawesi Seas
We stayed at Dive 7000, a small family-run "resort" with adequate air-conditioned rooms and good food. The diving is world-class literally right off the steps of the resort but you can go out on a banka each day to many of the other fabulous dive sites. Don't expect to see big critters here. Concentrate on the 2500 species of reef fish, the beautiful coral, multitude of nudibranches and other invertebrates. Excellent for Macro photography. I've been diving around the world for 29 years and this is the best! You will see more in one dive here than you see in an entire week somewhere else. Frog fish in every color, large and small, leaf fish, ghost pipe fish in at least 4 varieties, seahorses (one curled it's tail around my outstretched finger!), mandarin fish, flamboyant cuttlefish, dragonetes. Half the time I have to photograph something and look it up later. Many of my photos contain surprises when I see them on the computer like a small shrimp in bubble coral or a ghost pipefish in a crinoid that I hadn't noticed when I took the photo.
I'm convinced that this is the best kept dive secret there is! Spectacular night diving.
Three hours drive south of Manila. The resort can send a driver for you. Best part, besides it being very reasonably priced? They do everything for you. Come out of the water and strip off your gear and it will magically appear all dry and laid out for your dive the next morning! I like that. Actually there are two "best parts." There were NO mosquitoes at all, which is why I usually do live-aboards instead of land-based dive sites. Best time to go--the dry season March-June. Water temp is about 81-82. I was too hot in a 3.2 mil wetsuit and was much more comfortable when I dived in a skin and a very thin shortie.

After Anilau we flew to Dumaguete to dive Bahura and Apo Island from the Bahura Resort, more upscale rooms and food but they don't rinse your wetsuit for you. The diving is just a spectacular there but night diving is not allowed unless you get permission from the Mayor. We did get permission for one fabulous dive. Water temp 82-84.
Next trip will be to Tubbataha on an Explorer Boat but I'd love to stop by Bahura Resort and Dive 7000 in Anilau again if I have the time.

Cobalt Ridge, Cobalt Coast Resort

   Cayman islands  Caribbean Sea
Divetech at Cobalt Coast Resorts house reef is an easy shore dive just off the end of the pier. The mini wall is 5 minutes off shore that teams with seafans to the coral reef formation that starts at 30 feet of depth. Excellent photo opportunities, abundant marine life, large schools of snapper, grunts, sargeant majors, baracuda, schoolmasters and riddles with colorful sponges in all colors of the rainbow.

Access for shore is easy, and the dive shop hosts restrooms, showers, changing rooms, lockers, retail shop, restaurant, bar, rental equipment, dive site maps, shaded setup benches, rinse tank, drying rack, fresh water pool. Snorklers are welcome also!

Naiqoro Passage

   Fiji  Pacific
Wall dives on both sides of the passage also home to Spot X and the Japanese Gardens.

This passage offers one of the finest dives in Fiji, abounding in pelagic and reef fish, sharks and coral gardens exploding with colour.

The passage can experience some strong currents and with little up or down movement however, the diver can get the real ‘superman’ flying experience.

This passage is a marine reserve.

The Channel - Wakatobi

   Indonesia  Banda Sea
This was an amazing dive. First we swam along the wall at around 80 feet. when we came to the entrance of the cahnnel we hung on near the edge waiting to see ahrkes. We did see one shark, then when we let go we were swept into the channel for a wild ride!

Everthing flew past us as we drifted in to this inlet at several knots. Not the best for underwater photography due to the current, but a fantastic dive anyway!

To see underwater photography from this trip go to visit my web site at website
