Cruising between swim-throughs along Punta Delila, I paused over a coral head and spied what appeared to be tiny tentacles nestled within a fissure at the bottom of a healthy patch of polyps. It wasn't until later, after reviewing Humann/Deloach's 'The Reef Set' that I identified this specimen as a Branching Anemone. Fairly common ...or so the descripton goes, but I had never noticed these creatures until putting my new 100mm Canon macro lens into use. By retraining my eye to look for small subjects I've found a whole new world of exotics revealed as never before!

Holbox is one of three interconnected Freshwater Cenotes which have BELL FORMATIONS.. There are no other known caves or cenotes so far in the world which have these. Predominantely they are Stalegtite types but undisturbed over millenia they have developed into swirling Mandelbrote Fractals (swirls within swirls). The cenotes all have inverted mushroom entrances opening up into a massive cap with regular stalegtites on the cave roofs. The Bell are found around and beneath a thin cap of sulphuric acid starting at 24m. They are complicated dives needing extra safety equipment, lines, air and lights, be prepared for a long cold safety stop. Advanced plus divers only. The caves are pristine with visibility excellent.
