The Phi Phi Islands are located in Thailand, between the large island of Phuket and the western Andaman Sea coast of the mainland. Phi Phi Don, the larger and principal of the two Phi Phi islands, is located at 7°44'00?N, 98°46'00?E. Both Phi Phi Don, and Phi Phi Leh, the smaller, are administratively part of Krabi province, most of which is on the mainland, and is located at 8°02'30?N, 98°48'39?E. Ko Phi Phi Don ("ko" (Thai: ????) meaning "island" in the Thai language) is the largest island of the group, and is the only island with permanent inhabitants, although the beaches of the second largest island, Ko Phi Phi Lee (or "Ko Phi Phi Leh"), are visited by many people as well. There are no accommodation facilities on this island, but it is just a short boat ride from Ko Phi Phi Don. The rest of the islands in the group, including Bida Nok, Bida Noi, and Bamboo Island, are not much more than large limestone rocks jutting out of the sea. Phi Phi Don was initially populated by Muslim fishermen during the late 1940s, and later became a coconut plantation. The Thai population of Phi Phi Don remains more than 80% Muslim. Ko Phi Phi Leh was the backdrop for the 2000 movie The Beach. Phi Phi Leh also houses the 'Viking Cave', from which there is a thriving bird's nest soup industry. There was criticism during filming of 'The Beach' that the permission granted to the film company to physically alter the environment inside Phi Phi Islands National Park was illegal.

Racha Noi another further South offers on the east side sandy areas with hard corals and rock formations. One truly spectacular dive site is the "SouthTip". Giant boulders are nicely covered with soft corals and the scenery is almost like Similan Islands. Deep water around guarantees good visibility and occasional strong current put forward and bigger pelagics such as barracudas, leopard sharks, eagle rays, blackspotted stingrays, big groupers and manta rays.

This dive site is really unique. The site is a reef surrounding a small island that is attached to Koh Phangan by a sandbar that you can walk over. The reef is easily accessable by the shore or boat. What I really loved the most is the coral has nearly no damage which is quite unusual at sites in Thailand. The coral is very diverse, staghorn, brain, boulder, whip, fan - the list is endless and all in prisitine condition. One amazing feature of the site is an anenome garden approx 30m square - I have never seen one like this before - you amost get vertigo diving through as there is nothing solid in sight to focus on and it is very shallow at 2-4m deep. There are big shoals of fusilier, trevally and yellow fin barracuda and occasional green back turtles, black tip reef sharks. Every dive I have done there I have also seen blue spotted sting rays. There is a dive shop situated on koh Ma called Phangan Divers and the staff there are very friendly and helpful.

Shark Point is part of a Marine Sanctuary that was created in 1992, where there is no commercial fishing, and collecting marine life is forbidden. You will find a reef teaming with life, and a sandy bottom where leopard sharks often rest. It is very colourful, with schools of tropical fish, sea fans and soft corals covering the rock. It can be hard work finning with a quite brisk current, but they do tend to run parallel to the reef. A good photograhic dive.

The dive site is a huge pinnacle that starts at its peak just below the surface and then decends some 30m. It took about an hour to reach by boat, but was well worth the wait. We saw sea anemones as far as the eye could see that looked like huge fields swaying in the breeze. There are plenty of fish to photograph, including tuna, barracuda, tropical and clown fish and an abundance of lion fish. Although we did not see any we were told that you could find leopard shark here.
