Can only be reached by Pump Boat from Dumaguete or nearby towns. We stayed at Atmosphere resort, where a 40 min trip led us to a very different underwater world, compared to the muck diving along the nearby coast. A lot of backpackers tend to stay on the island. Underwater there is the most beautiful unspoilt coral and more turtles than you could possibly dream of. Apo Island is a volcanic island covering 12 hectares in land area, 7 kilometers off the southeastern tip of Negros Island and 30 kilometers south of the Negros Oriental capital of Dumaguete City in the Philippines. The name "Apo" was derived from the a Filipino word which literally means, "Grandchild". The marine habitat around the island is a marine reserve, protected by the National Integrated Protected Area Act (NIPA) and under the jurisdiction of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB). It has become a popular dive site and snorkeling destination with tourists. There are two resorts on Apo Island, both of which have their own dive centers: Apo Island Beach Resort and Liberty's Lodge. There is a ranger station and a lighthouse. The religious practice of Apo Island is generally Roman Catholic under the care of the Augustinian Recollect Friars.Formerly, it was administered by a Diocesan Priest but it was in 2008 that the Augustinian Recollects was requested to continue the mission. The patron saint of Apo Island is San Vicente Ferrer. The island is under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Dauin, Negros Oriental, and is one of the municipality's 23 barangays. As of the 2010 census, the island has a population of 918.

I dove last week of June with typhoon signal number 2. It was rough on top but relatively calm the deeper I went. I went down 6 p.m. there was still a little light despite the rain. Visibility with the use of torch is still okay. A good place to dive, whole year round. Bankeros (banca drivers) are very good spotters and would spoil divers.

Porcelain crabs are decapod crustaceans in the widespread family Porcellanidae, which superficially resemble true crabs. They are typically less than 15 mm (0.6 in) wide, and have flattened bodies as an adaptation for living in rock crevices. They are delicate, readily losing limbs when attacked, and use their large claws for maintaining territories. [Wikipedia]
